Downtown/North End
Central Wharf / New England Aquarium
A welcomed addition next to Central Wharf is the new Fidelity Park. Opened in July, 2007, the well-designed park provides shaded seating areas and well-maintained landscaping, and links Long Wharf with the Rose Kennedy Greenway.
The New England Aquarium, located on Central Wharf, first opened its doors to the public in 1969 and is still a favorite destination for children and adults. Be sure to visit the New England Aquarium’s newest addition, the Marine Mammal Center on the new HarborWalk, which opened on 1 July 2009. The new $10 million facility is home to five fur seals; there are only 20 fur seals in captivity in the world today. Visitors will be able to see and hear the seals; seating is available during four seal shows daily with admission. In the evening, the LED strips make for an interesting walk along the Aquarium’s newest HarborWalk segment.
Don't miss the tank with Harbor seals next to the ticket booth ... it's free! Feeding times are particularly good times to see the seals interact with the trainers.
The Matthew and Marcia Simons IMAX Theatre features a six-story flat screen designed to show animals and habitats in a larger than life format. The HarborWalk continues behind the IMAX building around the outer edge of the Aquarium. Amenities include benches where visitors can sit and relax taking in the views of the harbor. Maintenance improvements to the HarborWalk around the New England Aquarium are on-going.
