Neponset River Trail
The Neponset River Trail is a 2 1/2 mile multi-use trail that runs along the Neponset River, the river estuary, and the Neponset Marsh. The trail runs along an old railroad bed, and currently stretches from the Port Norfolk neighborhood in Dorchester to the Central Avenue T Station in Milton. Future plans call for the trail being extended further south into Mattapan.
The trail has both paved and gravel paths, but is consistently flat, making it ideal for pedestrians, runners, and cyclists. Especially during the summer, the trail is a popular exercise route, because of its length and seclusion from traffic. There are multiple resting areas along the trail with benches, maps, distance indicators, information about local wildlife, as well as piers for fishing.
The Neponset Estuary and Marshes are designated as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern. While providing ample opportunities to observe wildlife, the marshes are important nursery habitat for smelt, and productive shellfish beds. Wide varieties of birds visit these marshes during their seasonal migrations and some species nest here. The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is also restoring the Neponset River Salt Marsh on the Lower Neponset River.
