USS Constitution “Old Ironsides” is the world’s oldest commissioned navy warship. She saw action during the War of 1812, winning three battles against British warships. The nickname “Old Ironsides” comes from the story of a crewmember who watched shots bounce off the USS Constitution's oak hull and cried out that her sides were made of iron. The name “Old Ironsides” has been with the ship ever since. The ship has been permanently stationed at Charlestown Navy Yard since 1897. Free tours by members of the US Navy are available regularly.
