Charlestown

North Washington Street (Charlestown) Bridge / Charles River Dam and Locks

Charles River Dam and Locks Building: The building houses large and powerful pumps that keep
water from the Charles flowing into the Harbor. The Charles River
Basin is maintained at a level that will not flood the Esplanade and Back Bay
neighborhoods. The building and dam sit adjacent to the lawns, playgrounds and additional urban artwork at the Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Paul Revere Park. Don’t miss Paul Matisse’s interactive Bells sculpture.
